How New Horizons Came to Be:

After over 20 years of teaching, mentoring, and helping shape programs within a large certifying organization, I (Laura Nance) found myself at a turning point. I had poured my heart into that work as a trainer, program advisor, curriculum developer, and leader, but when it was time to move on, it wasn't an easy course.

However, sometimes doors close in ways we don’t expect, but they also open up doors to something new.

At first, I thought I’d simply continue teaching my own trainings independently. But then, something bigger happened. Other experienced trainers reached out, trainers who also felt ready to step away from old structures but didn’t want to build something entirely on their own. They wanted community, not competition. Mentorship, not micromanagement. A place where they could still teach what they loved, but with more freedom and support.

That’s how New Horizons Training Network came to life.

I created New Horizons to be everything I had longed for in a training organization: transparent, up-to-date, evidence-based, and rooted in support - not control. Our trainers aren’t managed; they’re doula’d. We care deeply for the people we train and for those who train them. Each of the trainers in the network brings their style and experience to the space, while working from a shared foundation of professionalism, heart, and high-quality education.

As the network grew, so did my vision. Beyond the core doula and educator certifications using the New Horizons curriculum, we’ve expanded to offer more independent certification trainings, advanced trainings, and specialty workshops. This provides our students with more opportunities to learn and grow in one place, and it gives trainers a chance to share their unique wisdom with a broader audience.

New Horizons isn’t just a training organization; it’s a community. One built on mutual respect, shared purpose, and the belief that when we support each other, everyone benefits: the trainers, the students, and the parents.

Anyone with a heart for supporting new families, whether you're brand new to birth work or a seasoned doula looking for a refresh or a new training & certification pathway or advanced trainings to take your work to a new level.

Do you offer online or in-person training?

We offer both! Many trainings are fully online and interactive, while others are in-person or hybrid. Self-paced trainings are coming soon! Each training listing will clearly explain the format.

Yes. Our certification trainings are built to meet the highest standards and prepare you for certification through Perinatal Professionals Association or other organizations, where applicable.

How long do I have to complete my certification?

Perinatal Professional Association-approved trainings have one year to complete certification. Other programs have different timelines. Please see the training description for more information.

Do I need any prior experience to take your trainings?

Not at all! Our trainings are beginner-friendly and also offer depth for experienced professionals. We meet you where you are.

Will I be certified right after the training?

Our certification trainings are the first step toward certification. You’ll complete additional steps to earn your credential.

Do you help with getting clients or starting a business?

Yes! We offer business-building resources, networking opportunities, and ongoing mentoring. You’ll never be left wondering, “Now what?”

Are your doulas eligible for Medicaid, and family benefits program reimbursement?

We are approved for the Carrot database. We are actively working on Medicaid approval in multiple states.

How much do your trainings cost?

Each training varies in cost. Check the individual training for pricing. We do our best to keep trainings accessible while also valuing the expertise, preparation, and heart that go into offering a truly professional, high-quality, and impactful experience.

Do you offer scholarships or financial aid?

Trainers at New Horizons are independent educators who set their own policies, including pricing, discounts, and scholarship availability. We encourage you to reach out directly to the trainer of your chosen course to learn more about their options.

What’s your refund or transfer policy?

We understand that life happens. Please refer to the refund and transfer policyof each training for specifics.

Will I have support during and after the training?

Absolutely. Support is our jam. You’ll have access to your trainer, the owner, Laura, alumni community groups, and continued mentorship throughout your journey.

Is there a community or alumni network?
